Last year, the Playmaker Group were commissioned by CBBC to produce a series of short videos that would profile and celebrate key history making Black figures. The series, entitled ‘Our Black History Heroes’ would see young people from across the UK select their hero, research and develop a script and then present it on camera. The story of their hero would then be animated to create an educational yet entertainment 2 min short broadcast on CBBC.
Conceptualised by PMG Creative Director, Ray Paul and developed by his daughter Talia and PMG Director Yaw Owusu’s son, Zion, the idea went through extensive development in 2020. Working alongside video production company Concrete Films, Our Black History Heroes commenced production late last year.
The first 10 episodes were broadcast on CBBC between May 24th and 4th June and are now on iPlayer. The remaining set of episodes will run during October 2021.
